    Jo Ambros: Bread and Roses

M Leopoldo Cardona

In 1937, during the spanish civil war Ernst Busch travels to Spain to sing for the International Brigades fighting with the republicans against the coup led by Franco. He comes across the song "Canto nocturno en las trincheras" by José Miguel Ripoll and Leopoldo Cardona, "Nightly singing in the trenches". It is by no means quiet in the trenches at night. When the guns fall silent, fighters on both sides loudly shout their slogans at the opponent.

Both sides have their songs. While the fascists sing about the morning, the sun and the Catholic Monarchs, the republicans prefer popular battle songs like the "nocturnal song" which is anything but peaceful: "Brota sangre del obrero / para un futuro mejor", "The blood of the worker flows / for a better future". It is a song to renew the tired fighters waning morale.

Ernst Busch publishes a songbook for the International Brigades in Spain. His translation makes "Canto nocturno en las trincheras" a popular anti-fascist song in Germany.
